Easing of Blood Donations Guidelines by FDA

AID Atlanta applauds the FDA for following the science and easing recommendations for blood donations that are inclusive of all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation. This is a major step forward in the fight against HIV and AIDS and will help to ensure that our blood supply is safe and available for everyone who needs it.

However, We are disappointed that the FDA has chosen to continue to place a deferral period on individuals who are taking PrEP. This FDA-approved drug therapy has been proven to prevent new HIV infections. This policy is based on outdated and stigmatizing stereotypes about HIV and AIDS and does not reflect the current state of science.

We urge the FDA to follow the science and reconsider this policy, and to treat all blood donors equally. By doing so, the FDA can help to ensure that our blood supply is safe and available for everyone who needs it.
